Q’s Newborn Session | Santa Clarita Newborn Photographer
After shooting Q’s birth and Fresh 48, he came to us about a week later to visit us, Santa Clarita Newborn Photographer, in our home studio. His cheeks were even bigger this time!
Unfortunetly Q was having a very rough start and was diagnosed with GERD (gastroesophageal reflux disease). I’m very familiar with the handling of babies with this disease not only due to my training, but due to my oldest daughter suffering a very severe form of this when she was born and all throughout her first year. GERD is a very common condition in newborn babies. The simple definition of this is the ring of muscle between the esophagus and the stomach is not yet fully developed when they are born. This means the contents of their stomachs easily flow back up their esophagus because there’s no “shut off valve” if you will to block it from not getting into their throats.
When handling babies with GERD in my studio I try and keep them at an incline while I spend time wrapping them and unless on their stomach, I don’t lay them flat. When they are on their back and laying flat, the pressure on their back allows that fluid to come rushing back up. If I put them at an incline, this allows gravity to pull the fluid down to their bums.
Due to this, Q didn’t have a very long session. Our goal is to keep them comfortable and not in pain and GERD is very painful for babies. Imagine really bad heartburn, but when you’re only a week old!
I am happy to report that as I write this and he’s much older, he’s doing loads better. He still has to wear a bib and spits up a lot but he’s a happy chunky baby now!
